In Malaysia, BNP Paribas began its business in 1974 with the opening of a
representative office in Kuala Lumpur. It obtained the licence to open a
branch under the Offshore Banking Licence in 1993 and was enabled to provide
Foreign Currency Loans and Derivatives instruments, as well as to issue
Ringgit-Denominated Guarantees for companies in Malaysia.
BNP Paribas Peregrine Sdn. Bhd., its Asian Investment Banking arm, was set
up in 1999 to conduct Corporate Finance advisory work and Equity Research on
Malaysian companies for dissemination to overseas clients. It is now called
BNP Paribas Capital Bhd. In 2007, BNP Paribas Asset Management Malaysia Sdn.
Bhd.was set up as an integrated investment solutions provider.
BNP Paribas Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. and BNP Paribas Islamic Asset
Management Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. became known as BNP Paribas Investment
Partners Malaysia and BNP Paribas Investment Partners Najmah Malaysia Sdn.
Bhd. respectively, being implemented as part of an internal rebranding
exercise of BNP Paribas Investment Partners.
BNP Paribas is one of the five foreign banks and the only European bank who
has received in 2010, a full banking licence. BNP Paribas Malaysia Berhard
started operations on June 1st, 2011.
With the establishment of BNP Paribas Malaysia Berhad, it now able to offer
its clients, comprising multinational subsidiaries, local large corporates,
banks & financial institutions or institutional investors, a whole range of
diverse and dynamic financial products and services in ringgit and foreign
currency to meet their needs.
Due to Bank Negara Malaysia
regulation, BNP Paribas in Malaysia are not providing consumer hire
purchase financing.
